Then as soon as he attained a job as a Sr. All these jobs really helped Jeremy to get the key contacts needed and the experience that record labels want. He has had various jobs, he firstly started off as a sports writer for The Badger Herald in 2007, and then after this he became a marketing intern in 2010, a few jobs later he ended up as an online media manger for Ultra Records. Jeremy is the perfect example of someone who has worked various jobs and gained experience to end up within the industry, in this case, ending up as an A&R agent. Jeremy has had a lot of experience within music, experiences dating back all the way from 2007. Jeremy Vuernick is VP A&R rep for Capitol records. Other than qualifications needed as an aspiring A&R agent you could possibly take it upon yourself to work with artist in you networks, doing certain jobs for them like putting on gigs for them to play, getting a producer or anyone within your contacts to work with these artists. The most important training though comes from your involvement within the scene. Other than experiences within music, there are many different courses you can attend in colleges that will help grow out your CV and hopefully make you more employable, these course include: marketing, communications or business and by achieving these grades within the courses, it will hopefully give the skills and foundation you need to start getting your foot in the musical door. Like I mentioned before experience is everything in music industry and having the right involvement within the music scene is key. Many aspiring agents have a personalized blog where they can update daily with new acts or artists they find, this is great to show on a CV or show an employer at an interview as it shows how dedicated you may be. Most scouts of the industry try to promote band nights / clubs, run small labels or run bands, by doing these small jobs it’ll boost your contact list and get you more connected with people who could help you out in the future. When trying to become an artist and repertoire rep it’s crucial to be able to contact any new artists on the rise. This isn’t a 100% guaranteed way of getting the job role and there isn’t a time scale as to when you’ll move up, but this is defiantly the best way of doing so. The most popular way to become an A&R agent is through starting an unpaid job as a scout, this way you could get your expenses paid for but unfortunately won’t earn you any type of salary, but will defiantly put you on an imaginary waiting list as a paid A&R if any type of vacancy ever opens up. With most areas within the music industry, there isn’t a set way to achieve a job as an artist and repertoire rep, the best chance of securing a paid job is by networking and building up your contact list with many different people in the industry, from producers, engineers, artists to tea boys/girls, runners or even the office cleaner, anyone who works within the music world could potentially help you out, its best to have a healthy relationship with that person, whoever it may be as there may be an opening one day and then that person can contact you to come in and do that certain job, all giving you experience within the industry that you can add to your CV. Within a record label an A&R representative will search for new artists and hopefully sign them to their label, this is their main responsibility! There are many people that do this job and are a crucial part in any record label as they’ll typically find the talent and get them signed. So what does A and R stand for? A&R stands for artist and repertoire. For my second job description in the music industry, I have decided to talk about and describe what an A&R is. ![]()
